The Science of Double Cleansing, Why You Need Oil
Double cleansing is a technique that originated in K-beauty and is now recognised by the global dermatological community. The core principle is 'Like Dissolves Like' (Cleveland Clinic, CeraVe). Sebum, makeup, and most sunscreens are oil-based impurities. These cannot be effectively removed by water alone; cleansing oils or balms are required to dissolve them.
The first step, oil cleansing, dissolves oil-based residue on the skin surface. The second step, water-based cleansing (foam/gel), removes water-soluble impurities like sweat and dust along with any oil residue. This process prevents clogged pores, reduces breakouts, and enhances the absorption efficacy of subsequent skincare products (Healthline, Paula's Choice).
While oily skin types often worry about using oil, appropriate non-comedogenic oils actually help regulate excess sebum. Lightweight plant oils like jojoba or grapeseed oil gently dissolve sebum, keeping pores clean without stripping the skin.
